NEW DELHI: A highly unusual monsoon season this year has yielded 1,100 mm of rainfall in Delhi so far, the highest in 46 years, and almost double the precipitation recorded last year, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Saturday. The figures are subject to change as more rainfall is predicted in the city during the day.

The Safdarjung Observatory, which is considered the official marker for the city, had gauged 1,150mm of rainfall in the 1975 monsoon season. This year, the precipitation has already hit the 1,100-mm mark and the season has not ended yet,” an IMD official said.

Normally, Delhi records 648.9mm of rainfall during the monsoon season, according to the IMD. Between June 1, when the monsoon season starts, and September 11, the city normally gets 590.2mm of rainfall.

The monsoon withdraws from Delhi by September 25. Light to moderate rain is likely in the next two days. Another wet spell is predicted around September 17-18,” the official said. In 2003, the national capital had received 1,050mm of rainfall. Delhi gauged 636mm, 544mm, 876mm, 370.8mm and 505.5mm during the monsoon season in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015, respectively. It recorded 524.7 mm rainfall in 2016; 641.3mm in 2017; 762.6mm in 2018; 404.3mm in 2019 and 576.5mm in 2020, according to IMD data. It has been a bountiful September for Delhi, with 343.6mm of rainfall recorded so far this month, which is the highest in at least 12 years, according to data available on the IMD’s website.

The September rainfall this year has been in marked contrast to the last year, when the city got a meagre 20.9mm precipitation in the month against the normal of 129.8mm. Delhi recorded more than 100mm of rainfall on two consecutive days at the start of the month — 112.1mm on September 1 and 117.7mm on September 2. On Saturday (September 11), it recorded 94.7mm precipitation. Despite the monsoon embracing Delhi only on July 13, making it the most-delayed in 19 years, the capital had recorded 16 rainy days in the month, the maximum in the last four years.

Weather experts have predicted that the current rainy season may get extended up to early December in Marathwada and other parts of the state. The intensity of rainfall during such extended period, however, may be not as vigorous as witnessed during past instances of protracted rainy season.

Shriniwas Aundhkar, director of city based APJ Abdul Kalam Astro Space and Science Centre, on Tuesday said that the average Equatorial Pacific Sea Surface Temperature may go down in near future producing La Niña conditions. “La Niña is a complex weather system that occurs every few years and causes extended rainfall in parts of the country. As per early forecast, the weather systems concerned may evolve in such a manner that Marathwada and other parts of the state witness rainfall beyond the stipulated period,” he said.

The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), the difference in sea surface temperature between a western pole in the Arabian Sea and an eastern pole in the eastern Indian Ocean, gradually becoming negative may reduce the amount of showers during the possible extended period of the rainy season, Aundhkar said.
Echoing the possibility of extended rainy season, physicist and meteorologist Prof Kirankumar Johare said the current cloud conditions also give a hint that the rainy season was here to stay for a longer period that usual. “Going by the current weather systems, the monsoon has now just settled over Marathwada and other parts. We can observe Nimbus clouds at present which imply that extended rainy season is likely,” he said.

Marathwada observes rainy season from June to September during which the region gets average 679 mm rainfall. The region, so far, received 94% of total expected showers, shows official data.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday said that moderate rainfall with the possibility of heavy spells is likely in the city and suburbs. The IMD in its 24-hour forecast has predicted moderate rainfall in city and suburbs with the possibility of heavy rainfall at isolated places.

According to data shared by the BMC, the island city, eastern suburbs, and western suburbs recorded 39.84 mm, 44.93 mm and 49.12 mm rain, respectively, in the last 24 hours. Meanwhile, a high tide of 4.36 metres is expected at 12.40 pm in Mumbai. Also, a low tide of 0.70 metres is likely to occur at 6.49 pm today. When there is a high tide during the rainy season, it becomes difficult for the flooded water to recede. Low tide helps floodwaters in the city to find an outlet to enter the seas.

Meanwhile, IMD on Tuesday issued a yellow alert for nine districts in Maharashtra’s Vidarbha, warning of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with lightning at few places. The IMD’s regional centre has forecast heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with lightning and issued the alert for one or two places in Nagpur, Bhandara, Gondia, Amravati, Wardha, Gadchiroli, Chandrapur, Yavatmal and Washim districts for Tuesday and Wednesday.
